By the time the Declaration of Independence was read in Philadelphia, the people of Virginia’s two remote Eastern Shore counties were moving towards war. Some already marched for the Patriot cause. The times were electric, they were terrifyingly uncertain, and they were marvelously hopeful.  No one, absolutely no one, could imagine what the next few years would bring.
